6 Simple Hacks To Get Organized

Fall has such incredible feelings of growth, change and something new. Even though Summer is my favorite season with the long days, spontaneous happy hour and get togethers with friends, there is something very magical about September. Getting back on track with regular schedules and beginning familiar routines again in the coziness of pumpkins and fall sweaters. This can also be a time of incredible overwhelm at the idea of getting our lives and our spaces organized. But don’t fret, I have a few simple hacks to help you get organized.

  1. Focus on what is important ~ WOW! This one can be tricky! We tend to tie emotion to our lives and to our things. Attempting to take emotion out of the equation can bring some honest perspective on what is truly important.  This is a crucial step to eliminating all the extras that get in our way of our goal. This may mean donating your grandmother’s spoon collection to declutter your space. This may mean saying “no” to your third in-person meeting this week and tuning in virtually to ensure you can focus your time where it is necessary. Whatever it is, focusing on what is important will ensure you stay true to your vision.

  2. Have a plan or a goal in mind ~ Knowing your end goal is key to knowing where you want to go. If you want to organize your work space, your calendar, or your home, having a clear, well defined goal will enable you to keep your focus. Often we are trying to focus on so many things at once, that nothing ends up happening because we are only doing small things everywhere rather than small things focusing on one goal. Decide what needs your time most right now.

  3. Make a daily list ~ Oh my goodness! Lists are my go-to! Lists are essential to ensuring you prioritize your day, create accountability and help ensure you remain focused.  Our brains are built to enjoy order and writing a list frees up our brain from having to remember everything. The concept of list making is simple: figure out what needs to be done, write it down, complete the task and cross it off your list.  You have to admit it is tremendously satisfying to cross items off your list!

  4. Delegate ~ Delegating our priorities to others may very well be one of the most difficult but important ways to get yourself organized. Many of you are entrepreneurs who have worked tirelessly creating the success you are currently experiencing. The thought of giving up some tasks to assist in your goal of getting organized can feel as though you are giving up responsibility for your business. When in fact, the reality is that the responsibility remains yours as a business owner. You are simply being resourceful by freeing up more of your time to take care of what is most crucial to your business and your finances.

  5. Utilize the “One Touch Rule” ~ this concept is admittedly simple. Be it an email, clutter or a task ~ once you touch it, deal with it. Put it away, reply to the email or answer the voicemail. Touching it once and completing it will ensure you do not spend more time than necessary on the task and will help in regularly decluttering. It also assists with quickly crossing more items off your to-do-list providing you with a more immediate sense of accomplishment.

  6. Do one thing at a time ~ the old way of thinking was that a person would be more productive if they could complete multiple tasks simultaneously. It is now a common thought that doing more than one thing at the same time can overstimulate your brain and makes us feel busier. Give your full attention to each item in front of you and you will find yourself being more productive.

These are a few simple steps to reclaim the JOY in your life, your business and your space. If you can even implement only a few of these hacks into your routine, you will notice exponential changes in your productivity. Use these tips, make them your habits and live your best life! I’d love to hear how you are reclaiming organization into your life.
